Punk – it’s not just a look, it’s a lifestyle.

Last night’s Met Costume Institute Gala tapped the theme “PUNK: Chaos to Couture,” which effectively gave celebs a free pass to dress as outrageously as they wanted.

Unfortunately, only a few stars took the theme to heart, and we have a sneaking suspicion they just didn’t “get” it.

But for those of us who were a little unsure what punk even is…here’s a quick tutorial. With early roots in London and New York City in the late ’60s and 70s, whether art, music, fashion, or literature, punk is basically just not giving a fuck. It’s rebellious, a little dangerous, and a lot crazy.

This is punk:

These dirty guys are the Sex Pistols.

Are you a New York punk?

Say hello to the Ramones.

Do you prefer your punk sexy?

Helloooo, Blondie.

OK, so now that we’ve got the aesthetic, who actually did punk at last night’s Met Gala?

Miley, we have to hand it to you. Between the hair and the fishnet Marc Jacobs dress, you’re on point.

Anne Hathaway? Imagine our surprise that this goodie two shoes actually went punk in Valentino – her bleached blonde pompadour is so Johnny Rotten.

Speaking of hair, Zachary Quinto shocked us with a shock of bright blue.

Oh Madonna, this is too young for you, but the Givenchy plaid, studs, spikes, chains, fishnet and padlock necklace are very punk.

Cara Delevingne is equal parts sexy and punk rock in Burberry.

Chanel Iman did punk so right with her shock of pink hair and J.Mendel black and white stripes.

Model Lily Cole showed up with Vivienne Westwood, who basically started punk fashion.

Anja Rubik is a scintillating red leather punk in Anthony Vaccarello.

LOL at KStew. Her attitude is always not to give a fuck, so she’s def punk. Plus the smoky eye makeup and wearing a Stella McCartney pantsuit to a gala? Pretty badass.

Dree Hemingway is a high fashion punk in Stella McCartney. Check the clogs.

Rooney Mara is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the girl with the black purple lipstick in Givenchy.

Elle Fanning, we love this tie dye eye makeup and Rodarte dress combo. You might think hippie, but the risk taking is extremely punk.

Sienna Miller is the epitome of pretty punk in Burberry. Leather, studs and that headband, we love.

Diane Kruger is a fashionista in Chanel, but she knotted her blonde locks in a weird updo and bleached it pink.

January Jones channeled Siouxsie Sioux with this eye makeup and Chanel minidress.

Eve looks like a punk rock dominatrix in Dominique Auxilly

Karen Elson got really punk with her septic nose piercing and gold Julien MacDonald

Lily Collins and her bf Jamie Campbell Bower are so freakin’ fashionably punk in Moschino

Andrew Bevan showed up with Hailee Steinfeld in a graffiti print suit.

Nicole Richie‘s hair! The Topshop-clad star looks like David Bowie’s sister.
