Is there a magazine cover or a red carpet that Kerry Washington doesn’t look absolutely flawless on? We’re going to go with no.

The latest cover of EMMY Magazine is no exception, as the beauty stuns in the June issue. But in a strange twist, the NACCP Image Award winner admits that the career that’s brought her the accolades, magazine covers and red carpets is a place she never intended to end up.

In the corresponding cover interview, Kerry admits that she never had plans to become an actress. In fact, she thought she’d become a college professor, “Or a shrink. I had a real curiosity about how people become the people they are.”

She continued:

“I realized there were lots of people who made a living as actors who may never be on the cover of a magazine, but still had fulfilling careers. And I decided, ‘I’m going to go for it.’ But I never really saw myself as someone who would be that girl on the cover of anything. I thought that to be an actress, you had to want to be famous,” she says. “And that wasn’t something I was interested in.”

But all of that changed when she said she reflected on her opportunities and noted acting was “paying for my extraordinarily expensive education at a private institution.”

Well aren’t we glad this is the path she stumbled onto? Can you imagine anyone else executing the role of Olivia Pope so perfectly? We sure can’t.
