Could it be POTUS is washing his own dishes and FLOTUS is doing the family’s laundry?
Well that’s not exactly true but the mandatory furloughs are having an impact on the first family’s home.
According to the Office of Management and Budget, the White House’s executive residence staff has been reduced by 83%.
Only 15 of the typical 90 workers who keep the Obamas’ apartment running, ranging from cooks to cleaning ladies to electricians, are now on the job. The OMB says the smaller crew is there to “provide minimum maintenance and support,”
ABC News reports:
White House spokesman Jay Carney said this week that the entire executive office of the president would be running on “skeletal staff,” making all operations in the West Wing and nearby executive office buildings “extremely lean.”
Overall, only a quarter of the 1,700 full-time White House staffers are currently on the job.
During the last shutdown of 1995 and 1996, when Bill and Hillary Clinton were in the White House, the official residence staff was similarly curtailed, according to news reports from the time.
The site says that even current assistant White House chef Sam Kass, who occasionally cooks evening meals for the first family, is on furlough. But the President is making do. He and Vice President Biden went out for sandwiches Friday to a nearby deli, giving a break to a much-reduced kitchen staff that would normally prepare their weekly meal in the private West Wing dining room.
Hopefully Congress reaches an agreement soon. People need their jobs back in action! And it would be nice if Obama gets his full staff back…
