Fredericksburg, Va., police have launched an internal investigation after video surfaced of police using a Taser on a man for 42 consecutive seconds.

The Saturday night incident started after Lantz Day, 36, tried to run away while being questioned by police. He was a passenger in a car that damaged five parked vehicles as it sped through downtown. The driver of the car managed to flee.

A video taken by a bystander shows Day trying to flee, then an officer using the Taser to detain him. The officer continues to stun Day for 42 seconds as he yells in pain. He was later arrested for obstruction of justice and placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under a $3,500 bond.

The police department is now investigating whether the officer’s actions were excessive or justified.
