Here’s some advice, kiddies. If you run into Michael Jordan, be nice to him. It might pay off in the future.
It sure did for Preston Truman. As a child, Preston was a ball boy for the Utah Jazz. Preston was working the infamous “Flu Game” during the 1997 Chicago Bulls vs. Utah Jazz NBA Finals — the game where Jordan was so sick he could barely stand by the end. (The Bulls would win that game 90-88 after MJ scored an amazing 38 points).
At the end of the iconic game, Preston asked Michael for the shoes he was wearing — the black and red Air Jordan 12s. Mike took the sneakers off, signed them and handed them off to the kid. Preston put the sneakers away in a safe, and never touched them. Yesterday, those sneakers sold for an amazing $104,765 dollars at an auction, breaking the record for a pair of game-worn Jordans. (The previous record was a pair of rookie season ones that he wore that went for $31,070).
So the question remains, why did Mike give him the shoes? Well, apparently earlier in the season, Preston had scored Michael some apple sauce and graham crackers before a game. MJ remembered the gesture and showed love the next time he saw him.
