A 26-year-old woman was hung on Saturday after being found guilty of murdering a man who allegedly tried to rape her during her teenage years.

Reyhaneh Jabbari was escorted to the gallows of Tehrin Evin’s prison at dawn, her fate decided after she was unable to get a statement of blame from the victim’s family within a 10-day deadline. Huffington Post reports:

Jabbari was sentenced to death in accordance with Koranic “qisas,” or eye for an eye, law after being found guilty of stabbing dead an older man with a kitchen knife in 2007. She had pleaded self-defense but failed to sway judges at various stages of appeal and had been kept in prison since her arrest. Her last chance of reprieve lay with Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose powers transcend all state mandates, but he never mentioned the case and has only rarely intervened in court cases regardless of political considerations.

We pray for Jabbari’s family during this difficult time. See a photo of her here.
