New Year’s Eve in Shanghai, China quickly turned tragic after a stampede occurred at the historic Chen Yi Square, during a New Year’s celebration.
According to the BBC, 36 people were killed, 25 of them being women. Another 47 people were injured during the incident, which took place about 30 minutes before midnight. The AssociatedPress is calling it the “worst disaster to hit one of China’s showcase cities in recent years.”
So why did the stampede occur? The investigation is still on going, but earlier reports seem to suggest that people had stopped to pick up fake money thrown from a nightclub balcony.
Ugh.
It’s still not clear how many people were there, but last year 300,000 people showed up to the same event, causing traffic issues in the city.
