Martin Luther King Jr.’s children are currently in a battle for the civil rights leader’s most prized possessions.
According to the LA Times, Dexter King and Martin Luther King have filed a lawsuit against their sister Bernice King to hand over King’s bible and Nobel Peace Prize so they can sell them to a potential private buyer.
Both sides have filed motions for a summary judgment, and a hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. If the judge does not rule for either side, or if the siblings do not reach a settlement, the case could go to trial in February.
The siblings and their attorneys could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday.
Bernice, who once sued Dexter for taking money from her mother’s estate to move into his own company, released a statement about the matter and called their attempt at selling King’s items “desperate.”
“There is no justification for selling either of these sacred items. They are priceless and should never be exchanged for money in the marketplace,” she said in a statement. “While I love my brothers dearly, this latest decision by them … reveals a desperation beyond comprehension.”
Dexter and Martin Luther King III are in control of King’s estate.
The news comes a day after John Legend and Common took home the award for “Best Original Song” from the film Selma at the 72nd Annual Golden Globes. The film tells the story of MLK’s journey from Selma to Montgomery during the Civil Rights Movement.
