New Jersey native Fetty Wap burst onto the music scene when his “hood” love song “Trap Queen” went viral on the ‘net just as the summer of 2014 came to an end.

Since then, “Trap Queen” has been remixed by some of the hottest rappers in the game, including Rick Ross, Migos, French Montana, Fabolous, and MMG rapper Fat Trel. But his place in hip-hop was solidified when Kanye West brought him out to perform at his Roc City concert during NBA All-Star Weekend.

We caught up with Fetty down at SXSW in Austin, Texas to discuss his overnight success, his love for Gucci Mane, and how he received the ultimate cosign from Kanye. Fetty also discussed his tough upbringing, not being affected by people’s negativity regarding his appearance, and wanting to change his name to honor his grandfather’s religious legacy.

Fetty Wap’s currently readying his self-titled debut project, which is due out later on this year. Watch our exclusive interview up top.
