In an emotional reunion that is sure to tug at your heartstrings, an Alabama mom deployed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for the last nine months surprised her son this weekend at his high school graduation, according to KTLA 5.

As Steven Turner Jr. strode across the stage at Paul W. Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa Saturday to accept his diploma, he was greeted by his mom, U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd class Vera Turner. Their strong, tearful embrace sent his mortarboard flying from his head.

They hadn’t seen each other since she left nine months ago and the naval officer told family that she would not be able to attend the graduation. She coordinated the surprise with school district officials, reports the television news site.

“It means so much to me, it means the whole world,” Steven Turner told the television station, CNN affiliate WBMA. “I thought she wasn’t going to make it.”

Turner told her son she was proud of him.“All he could say was ‘Mama, thank you,” Vera Turner told the television news outlet. “Thank you, mama. Thank you. I love you.”

What a touching story. Kudos all around to Steven on his graduation, his mom and the school district for helping to make it the best present ever for the teen.
