Orange Pumpkin On White Background

Happy Halloween?

More than $6 million in cocaine — about 360 pounds — was seized at the Port of Philadelphia after federal agents found the drugs amongst a shipment of pumpkins and squash from Costa Rica last Thursday.

According to the Associated Press, the discovery “was the port’s eighth-largest cocaine seizure to date.”

Had federal agents failed to intercede, the shipment was bound for a distributor in New York City. A tip passed to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials led to the discovery.

From Patch:

They were hidden in small laminated bags on the bottom of cardboard boxes containing the vegetables, said Paul Nardella, the Customs and Border Patrol Assistant Area Port Director with Homeland Security.

“The only way to find it is to inspect each and every box,” Nardella said. “It’s time consuming.”

“Because of the efforts of the law enforcement you see here today, this cocaine will never reach the streets of our city,” a Homeland Security spokesperson said.

An investigation continues. No arrests have been made in the drug trafficking case.
