Gerod Roth, the man who posted a photograph of his co-worker’s three-year-old son that ended up being the subject of racist jokes on Facebook, has released an official apology for his actions.

Roth, also known as Geris Hilton, was fired from his marketing job in Atlanta after his post sparked racist and ignorant remarks about Cayden Jace Jenkins, the son of co-worker Sydney Shelton. Roth gave his account of what led up to him taking the photo with Cayden, calling the child and his mother members of his “work family.”

Adding that he was unaware of the traction the photo gained, he called the other Facebook users who slandered the child “random internet acquaintances.”

Roth insists he tried to stop those commenting from making fun of Shelton’s son. Two others who commented on the photo — Tim Zheng and Emily Irene Red — have reportedly been terminated from their jobs.

You can read his entire statement in the Facebook post above.
