Rihanna kicked off the MTV VMA’s on pink overload.

The Video Vanguard award recipient opened up the show with her most memorable high energy dance hits “Please Don’t Stop The Music”, “Where Have You Been”, and “We Found Love.” The pop star brought the house down with high energy choreography as she and her dancers were dressed head to toe in bubblegum pink ensembles.

For the next performance, Rihanna gave us the real island ting we were looking for. Donning a doo-rag and feathered satin bra, the Bajan singer put on a bashment themed performance featuring some of her breakout reggae-fused hits like “Rude Boy” ,”What’s My Name”, “Work”

Next up, we got to see Rihanna’s edgier side. With a cropped cut, Rih Rih rocked out to “Needed Me” “Pour It Up” and “Bitch Better Have My Money.”

Mary J. Blige presented Rihanna’s final performance, reflecting on the little island girl whose biggest dreams came to life in a major way.

Rihanna wrapped up her night with the power ballads “Stay”, “Diamonds”, and “Love On The Brain.” Wrapped in a champagne-colored gown, Rihanna gave an emotional performance over the swinging sounds of a live symphony, making it easy to see how much she’s grown vocally over the years.

Rihanna’s real life prince charming Drake emerged from the side of the stage in a dapper tuxedo to present his longtime (eh, um) friend with her Video Vanguard Award. Drake reflecting on his first time meeting Rihanna in 2005 at her “Pon De Replay” video shoot in Toronto when he wasn’t so famous.

He applauds his friend for remaining authentic with her massive fame, and professes his love for the Caribbean singer. “She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old. She’s someone I look up to even though she’s younger than me. She’s one of my closest friends.”
