Battle of the late night talk show hosts!

Jimmy Kimmel opens up in the March issue of Playboy about his distaste for fellow late night TV host, Jay Leno. This should come as no surprise, however, since Jimmy doesn’t exactly keep it a secret. In fact, he once went as far as to do his entire show in a Jay Leno costume.

When asked by Playboy interviewers if he felt he was too relentless at the time, Kimmel replied, “I always feel bad if I hurt anybody’s feelings, but I don’t believe Jay Leno has actual feelings, and he doesn’t seem to be that worried about other people’s feelings.” Wow, Jimmy! Harsh.

Kimmel went on to say he had a good time doing the impersonation and found it very easy to do a ‘dumbed-down’ monologue for his Leno character.

He also dished out some of his tricks of the trade.

“I have a filter mechanism in my head every night when I put together the monologue for our show: If I can imagine Jay Leno telling a joke, then I won’t do it, even if it’s a good joke. There are three ways he does a joke, every single time, always with the same rhythm,” Kimmel told Playboy.

So why is there such bad blood between the two comedians?

Kimmel said he became confrontational in his famous Leno segment after stewing over Leno’s takeover of The Tonight Show.

“The more I thought about it the madder it made me. I didn’t want him to get away scot-free with what was happening all over again,” Kimmel said. “Keep in mind this was the second time he’d done this. The first time, he’d elbowed Dave out of the Tonight Show gig, and now he’d done it to Conan.”

Not everything Jimmy had to say about Jay Leno was bad though; he credits his late night counterpart as being “a smart politician but also a smart guy.”
