Diego was in critical condition at the South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center Monday after a stray New Year’s celebration bullet struck him in the head from at least a mile away.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokesperson Larry McKinnon said Diego was shot around 1 a.m. Sunday standing in his front yard in the 410 block of 14th Ave. S.E. in Ruskin.

Now Diego’s parents are witnessing a miracle as their son continues to recover from his New Year’s shooting.

Sandy Duran told Bay News 9: “It feels like witnessing a miracle. It really does, considering the trajectory of the bullet. It’s miraculous.”

Duran says doctors told her the next day or two is going to be crucial because of the potential for Diego’s brain to swell.

Ms. Duran went on to say, “A firearm is a weapon. It’s a weapon that takes a life. It’s not a tool or a toy for celebration.”

Detectives interviewed the child’s family members and neighbors. Detectives determined no one in the immediate area was firing a gun. Thankfully Diego is on the right track to recovery.
