The Senate is taking a stand against gun-violence. On Thursday, a bill was passed in the Senate Judiciary Committee that will tighten up restrictions on gun trafficking and “straw purchases” of firearms.

The bill passed with a 11-7 vote that could potentially make it harder for Mexican drug cartels to obtain guns sold in the United States. The bill would also attempt to block the flow of certain guns from states in which they are legal, to states in which they are illegal.

The Senate Judiciary Committee also reviewed legislation calling for bans on semi-automatic weapons modeled after military assault rifles.

The bill will now be sent to the full Senate for an official vote. This bill is the first of its kind to make it this far in the legislative process since the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

President Obama and many members of the Democratic Party are advocating for strong gun-control measures that are opposed by many Republicans and the National Rifle Association.
