Wisdom Wednesdays With Lynn Richardson: MC Lyte On Getting & MAINTAINING Wealth

Posted September 27, 2011 by Cacy Forgenie for Global Grind Staff

GlobalGrind’s Celebrity Financial Coach Lynn Richardson discussed business and money with the legendary MC Lyte and here is part two of what she had to say:

GlobalGrind: Many celebrities have lost their wealth by mismanaging their money, giving too much money to friends and family, and/or having an excessive entourage. Being in the game as long as you have, what practices have you adopted to remain financially secure?

MC Lyte: The first thing you have to realize, is that there is huge surplus of money out here and you create every moment for yourself. I have a friend who is always saying 'My breakthrough is coming soon!' and 'One day I will have money to do what I need,' and that’s the problem. Her breakthrough will ALWAYS be in the future, because that’s where she puts it. Because we create every moment for ourselves, what we have to realize is, this moment we are in right now was created long before it happened!

If you focus on being broke, that’s what you will be. If you focus on not having enough money, that’s what will show up. If you focus on being homeless, that’s where you will stay. The constant repetition of your thoughts will bring that very thing to you.

I remember when I bought my first home around 18 or 19 years old and I was spending money everywhere. Here I was, buying my first home, and I didn’t even have enough money to put curtains on the windows! Who buys a home and doesn’t have money for curtains? I had to put sheets on the windows, imagine that. I learned a valuable lesson. God gave me a second go ‘round and I was blessed that I could make another album and get off my hide to get more money. But I also realized that I had to create better moments for myself.

I have never been one to spend a lot of money on clothes, shoes, and things like that. But vacation, traveling, now that’s my thing. I will spend money on flights and hotels, but I realize I have to have discipline with everything.

Another thing, I was always the one to give, give, give! Today, I have no problem [saying] 'no' to people who want to borrow money, because it ruins relationships. I go out of my way to lend money and then the person goes out of THEIR way to stay out of MY way, because they don’t want to see me because they owe me money!

A big eye-opener for me was working with you, Russell and Dr. Chavis on the Hip-Hop Summits. That workbook (click here to download) helped me to better understand credit card debt and that this money thing is a continuous learning process. I am no better than the next person, we all have work to do to stay on top in the game of life.
