Why has cyber bullying taken over our social network universe? Facebook, Twitter and Myspace were created to stimulate interactions between friends and family that are seperated by city, state, country and continent.

As with most things, the social network universe became corrupted. The universe is sitting at its all time high and technolgical innovations only increase its capacity for growth. Unfortunately, the dark matter (i.e. cyberbulling) will grow with it. Children and teenagers are being bullied online at an alarming rate.

Teasing has existed since the  grand invention of the playground and it was only logical that it would evolve with the times and move into the computerized world. With great power comes great responsiblity, right? Computers gave the power of global communication to children with their tiny unwise ideas of responsibility. What else would we think would happen?

Seth Walsh, 13, from Central California was a target of taunts from classmates, died nine days after y hanging himself from a tree. Walsh had been in a coma since he was found unconscious in his Tehachapi backyard Sept. 19.

Rutgers University student, Tyler Clementi, 18,  told his roommate that he needed their shared room to himself for the night, but Clementi was unaware that his roommate Dharun Ravi and friend Molly Wei would be live-streaming him in a sexual encounter with another male student.

Ravi and Wei, both 18, have been charged with planting a webcam in a Rutgers dorm and broadcasting a classmate’s sexual encounter. Clementi is believed to have committed suicide. 

Dharun and Molly have both been charged with invasion of privacy for broadcasting a classmate’s September 19 sexual encounter. (It’s illegal to create pornography without the subject’s consent in New Jersey.) Local sources report that the victim ‘was believed to have jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge.’

Alexis Pilkington, 17, took her own life March 21 following vicious taunts on social networking site formspringme.com
