Zach Braff has no plan to reinvent himself. The former Scrubs actor is just going to continue to do what he has been doing. Starring in amazing movies like his latest small indie flick “The High Cost Of Living”. Zach plays a drug dealer name Henry in this dark drama, about a pregnant woman whose world falls apart when she loses her child in a hit and run accident. You can watch the High Cost Of Living, today on Video On Demand. Trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Zach also has a strong admiration for Tyler Perry and thinks he is a business genius. Zach opened up to us about that and more in a recent interview for his new film “The High Cost Of Living”, check out the interview below.

When you first saw, “The High Cost Of Living” what did you think of the movie?
When I first saw the movie I was blown away, because you just never know what someone is going to do when you make a movie. We had no money and this was 2010 low budget film making at it’s finest. No money, shot on video with a skeleton crew. On set it looked good, but you just have no idea. As a first time film maker Deborah was wonderful on set, but you didn’t know how she was going to edit the movie, so when I saw it I thought she did a fantastic job. I think she’s won an award at every festival she’s gone to, including best first film in Toronto which is a really cool award to get, so I was very pleased.

Being known as a funny guy, did you make a concious effort not to be funny?

I think after doing 8 and a half years of broad comedy you certainly fall into certain habits that I want to avoid. Even when I’ve done movies like Garden State, and Last Kiss I saw things I was doing, all actors have those sort of go to habits they can’t help but fall into.  So when I did this movie I was very aware, of not doing them. I even told the director don’t let me do x,y,z. Henry is a really still guy, he’s really down and depressed, lost and I think there wasn’t so much room for him to be quip’y or silly.

The film is set in Montreal, and I read that you had passport issues and had to fly into Canada, can you elaborate on that for us?
Yes, I had some passport issues, but we worked them out. I’m a pilot. So while we figured out my passport issues, I didn’t want to miss the press, if the movie is going to have an audience anywhere the eye of the storm would be Montreal, since it’s set in Montreal and it’s French Canadian and a quarter of the movie is in French. I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss Montreal press so I flew up there, and while I was in the air my passport issues got worked out.

Have you explored any other Genres that you’re interested in?
When you do one character for 8 and a half years you can’t wait to do everything. Yeah I want to do whatever is out there. I want to propel down a mountain with an uzi. Action, Drama, Theater is obvious something that’s very important to me.
What is your plan to break out of the shell of Scrubs?
This is the plan. I’m joking there is no plan, but the plan is to pursue things that really intrigue me and because of the success of scrubs they don’t have to be paydays. They don’t have to be things that I don’t believe in. I can take roles whether they be in tiny indies or off Broadway theater or a small part in a big movie. Whatever it’s something that makes me go wow that’s exciting I want to do that, I’d be proud to be in that. I’m in the rare position to say I only want to do things I really believe in and really think are good.

If you could interview one person, or sit down and talk to, in order to pick their brain?
You’re going to think this is a really funny answer, but it’s the truth and it’s Tyler Perry. Obviously I’m not the epicenter of his audience, not for his content, but for his business model. I think the man is a business genius. Obviously if he’s giving Oprah a Bentley. I think in this new age, he’s a person I really admire who said I’m not going to try to appeal to this whole country. I’m going to make movies for my audience and I’m going to do it really well and they’re going to love them and we are both going to have this wonderful symbiotic relationship. That’s something that very appealing to me going forward. So I’d like to sit down with him and grill him about that.
You know he has his own studio in Atlanta.
Yeah I’d like to build mine in New Jersey.
In our recent exclusive coverage of Tyler Perry, he said “The Oscars are political, they have their committees, they do what they do, they let who they want to play what they want to play. I don’t know how to play the game, maybe one day I’ll understand it. But I never will play the game!” Do you think Hollywood should be more inclusive?
No I think that’s like a victims stand point, it’s a business and like any business it’s all about making money. It’s nothing charitable about it. So you have to find your own niche. People like him are really impressive because they’ve gone outside the box. Like VOD is a new concept I think Tyler Perry would find a new concept. What if I just make movies that are targeted at my specific audience. I mean look at how much success he’s had at it. You know you’ve made it when you give Oprah a Bentley.
