Will Smith hasn’t changed since he was a kid when I was his manager. The record that attracted me to him as an artist was “Girls Of The World Ain’t Nothin But Trouble,” with that line when he said he “got punched in the eye.” When I asked Will what he did when he got punched in the eye, he said “I held my eye!” That was an outrageously courageous statement in a world cluttered with lots of fake, macho bullshit. My mantra has always been to work with the most honest and original people and his ability to practice humility, speak honestly about his feelings, along with originality and great natural talent, has been his formula for unprecedented success.

Yesterday, I had the treat to catch up with my old friend and sit with him on a calm Sunday morning. We laughed like kids and it warmed my heart to see such a humble, sweet man on the top of his already “triple-A” game. We talked about old friends and old times, and even talked about his movie trailer that has been getting all kinds of national attention when he was forced to move it a few days ago while shooting “Men In Black III” in New York City, because they said it was too big.

As Will spends months at a time filming a movie, his trailer is his home for many of these months, so of course my man got a nice, luxury joint that has a few amenities. It was funny to him how his trailer could become national news, just because the city asked him to move it. He told me, “I don’t really understand the controversy. ‘Men in Black 1 and 2’ and ‘Hitch’ used the same trailer, in the same place. In fact, we use it every time. We bring thousands of jobs and millions of dollars to this city.” He really didn’t want to comment or add fuel to the discussion, saying that you “never know what the media will latch on to.”

Anyhow, I’m in favor of bringing Will, the jobs, the money and the trailer back to New York City as many times as possible. But he’s for living in as small a trailer as the media will accept. Damn, I love that man. ‘Cause even with all the yoga, if I were giving this city all he is giving us, I wouldn’t move my trailer one inch.
