It didn’t come to a surprise when music heads first learned that Lady Gaga sold a little over a million records in her first week.

The “Born This Way” singer is practically the leader of a modern day music-loving-gay-pride-respect-everyone cult and touts a fan base of more than 10 million fans globally. With the music industry practically in the pits, album sales have been at all time low, but there are some artists who come few and far between that break the mold and sell a million records in the first week.

Out of the hundreds of artists us music lovers have listened to or watched, only 14 of them sold a million records in the first week, but what does that mean?

Well, for one, these artists at the time had a loyal fan base and for two, these artists had an album filled with hit songs. To top it off, most of these artists had amazing marketing teams that pushed their album tremendously.

Is Lady Gaga’s 1.1 million albums sold in a week cause for rejoicing and extraordinary praise? Well, for the musical aspect yes, but for pushing that many units in a week when she sold “Born This Way” for .99 cents on Amazon.com, as well as her album being placed in over 200 non-traditional retail stores that include more than 20,000 store fronts, no.

Lady Gaga’s “Born The Way” was practically in every store in America on her opening week and with the recession in full effect and her album going for a mere .99 cents, it’s no surprise that she sold 400,000 copies in the first day.

Amazon.com footed a $3 million dollar tab on all the albums Lady Gaga sold, but if you take Lady Gaga’s considerable amount of marketing techniques and the fact that only 10 percent of her Twitter followers bought her album, Lady Gaga did okay.

Lady Gaga is a record breaking line-stepping artist who deserves a hand clap for her success, but to be launched into a new stratosphere because she sold 1.1 million records is pushing it. Lady Gaga will now join artists like Lil Wayne, Taylor Swift, and 50 Cent, who’ve been the most recent inducted members of the “A milli” club and life goes on.

Lady Gaga will still have to work hard like she’s been doing and hope that her next album will meet or exceed the level of success as her “Born This Way” album.
