What Happened: Former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress has been freed from the Oneida Correctional Facility after spending two years for accidentally shooting himself in the leg with a Glock.

Where: Iraq

What Happened: Iraqi security officials say that a rocket attack has killed five American troops in Iraq.

Two Iraqi security officials say a barrage of at least three rockets hit an Iraqi base in eastern Baghdad on Monday morning and killed the five American troops. Earlier, the U.S. military said in a brief statement that five troops were killed, but gave no additional details about where the incident occurred or how they died.

Who: U.S. Senator Rick Santorum

What Happened: Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum declared his candidacy for president of the United States on Monday, vowing he’s “in it to win it.”

Santorum, a favorite among his party’s social conservatives, chose to confirm his plans during an appearance Monday morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He chose the western Pennsylvania coalfields for his formal announcement.

Better Than Fiction

Character: Sarah Palin

Plot Line: Sarah Palin does it again! Palin was asked about Paul Revere, the American Patriot during the American Revolution and she got it all wrong. Palin defended her account of Revere and his midnight ride, insisting that his warning essentially represented a message to the British that the revolutionaries weren’t going to back down.

“I didn’t mess up,” the potential GOP presidential candidate said this morning on Fox News Sunday. “I answered candidly and I know my American history.”

Hero of the Day

Who: Reggie Evans

What: Reggie Evans grew up homeless in Baltimore and was diagnosed with leukemia in ninth grade. But he isn’t letting anything block his path now. He’s a graduating senior at Anne Arundel County School. “I wanted to just get through, and I just wanted to show people that chemotherapy and having cancer and stuff wasn’t going to stop me from trying to be successful,” he said. After spending about six months in the hospital, Reggie took honors courses and advanced classes and ended up with a GPA above 3.0. Reggie said having the support of family and friends kept him going.

Whose Wallet: Jason West

Weight: 2,500 pennies.

How They Hustled: Jason West, a native of Utah, has been cited on a charge of disorderly conduct after paying for a disputed medical bill with 2,500 pennies. West went to Basin Clinic in Vernal on May 27 prepared to dispute an outstanding $25 bill and instead pulled out 2,500 pennies.
