What Happened: Supporters and opponents of gay marriage made 11th-hour appeals on Sunday as state lawmakers weighed a vote on making New York the sixth state ― and the most populous ― to legalize same-sex marriage.

The measure that would make gay marriage legal, introduced by Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat and strong advocate, is currently one vote shy of passage in the state Senate. The state Assembly approved the bill by a wide margin last week, and Monday is the last day of the legislative session before summer recess.

How They Hustled: Jarrett Barrios, the president of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), resigned on Sunday night following revelations that GLAAD had expressed support of AT&T’s merger with T-Mobile — while also taking $50,000 in donations from the company.

What Happened: Brazilian police are raiding another slum dominated by drug trafficking gangs in an ongoing program to bring peace to areas near Maracana stadium ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Photographers and cameramen from The Associated Press on the scene have seen hundreds of police officers and troops invading the Mangueira shantytown, backed by helicopters and several armored vehicles.

Where: Tucson, Arizona

Who: Gabrielle Giffords

What Happened: Representative Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head by a gunman who opened fire at a constituent event on Jan. 8, returned to Tucson this weekend for the first time since she was transferred by ambulance from Tucson Medical Center to a Houston rehabilitation institute two weeks after the attack.


Better Than Fiction

Character: Max Melitzer

Plot Line: A private investigator says he has tracked down a homeless Utah man and delivered some good news: He’s inherited a lot of money. David Lundberg said he found Max Melitzer pushing a shopping cart filled with personal possessions in a Salt Lake City park Saturday afternoon. Lundberg declined to disclose how much money Melitzer will be receiving, but said the man’s brother who died of cancer last year left him a “significant” amount in his will.
