Coldplay’s fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto was released recently and even though it is amazingly consistent with some of their previous work, there is something that stands out from the rest of their discography. It’s a concept album.

For those who don’t know, a concept album is defined as:

“unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical.” Concept albums tend to incorporate preconceived musical or lyrical ideas rather than being improvised or composed in the studio, with all songs contributing to a single overall theme or unified story.

These days, concept albums can be pretty risky. The band’s intention can be misunderstood and may come off as pretentious and trying too hard.
