J.Cole’s already a winner according to his mentor Jay-Z.

MTV sat down with Hov to chit-chat about his protege rap newcomer J.Cole and revealed how he thinks he’s the best new artist. 

J.Cole’s debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story got rave reviews by critics and was labeled a “classic” by Jay-Z. 

When asked about J.Cole’s “Best New Artist” nomination Jay-Z said:

“I think it’s great for him. I’m sure it’s a dream of his. I think he’s already won best new artist. I mean, to me his journey is what I’m really excited about, because it’s real. the person he is today, is not who he was when he first walked in. The artist development thing, we need more of it, because we need to ensure this thing is around for future generations.”

J.Cole’s album Cole World: The Sideline Story debuted at number one on the charts with 218,000 copies sold in the first week. Since then, Cole World:The Sideline Story has gone gold with over 500,000 copies sold. 

J.Cole’s going up against Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver for the title of this year’s “Best New Artist.” The competition is stiff but he has a fighting chance to take home the title.
