Over the past couple of years, The-Dream has been one of the most prolific R&B singers in music. Not only has he had his own hits, but he has also written and produced smash singles for some of music’s most recognizable stars.

His latest hit single is the controversial remix to Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake,” which features guest vocals from Chris Brown.

In an interview with VIBE magazine, Radio Killa talked about recording the original (which was just a short interlude on Rihanna’s Talk That Talk album) and the remix.

The-Dream says they recorded the original “Birthday Cake” around the time the album was due.

Time was of the essence, and The-Dream was only able to write the first verse and the hook, so that’s what was left on the album.

Later, Rihanna decided to do the remix, and she let The-Dream know she wanted her ex-flame on the song. When asked about his reaction when he found out Chris Brown was going to be on the remix, The-Dream said:

“My initial reaction was okaaaay. You know, Rihanna is pretty smart. She knows what she’s doing; she knows what she wants to do, and I’m behind her 100 percent on whatever it is she wants to do. She’s not harming anybody. It’s not really a care of mine, you know, to somebody who’s going to speak on it in whatever way. It only matters to me how she feels on whatever it is she’s doing.”

The-Dream was also asked about a collaborative effort he did with Jay-Z. When that question came up, The-Dream was brief. He said he and Jay worked together and when asked to elaborate, he simply just shook his head and said: “I can’t do that.”
