Jim Carrey’s latest movie, I Love You, Phillip Morris, is a bit of a departure from the normal comedic roles we’ve grown up watching the rubber-faced star slapstick his way through. Mostly because this is a romance movie about a pair of homosexual prison cellmates.  The star was on hand for last night’s Cinema Society/DeLeon Tequila screening of the flick and was more than vocal about taking on a controversial project, especially given the fact that the film took more than a year to gain distribution rights due to the content.

It was a risky movie,” Carrey told GlobalGrind.com exclusively at the premiere. “You know, in this kind of an economy where nobody wanted to gamble on a movie like this, it’s going to be a harder sell.” In fact, the version being released in theatres on December 3rd, is vastly different that the version which premiered initially at Sundance in 2009. But Carrey thinks its for the better. “I’ve seen both cuts and I think it’s definitely where it’s supposed to be now,” the actor told us.

And as for filming, what were shooting the love scenes like with his co-star and on-screen paramour Ewan McGregor? “Yes, I do kiss him,” Carrey said with a quick chuckle. “It’s like kissing a woman with hair,” he responded with a grin when we asked how that went. Did your hands get lost in the back of his hair? “Yeah, exactly,” he laughed.

Also at the screening was a largely unnoticed John Mayer, who skipped the red carpet, opting to chat with fans in the lobby of the theatre beforehand, Precious star Gabourey Sidibe, and the real life Phillip Morris, whom the movie’s plot was based upon.
