A 33-year-old cold case has finally come to a tragic end. NYPD officials have charged Pedro Hernandez, a 51-year-old father from New Jersey, with the kidnapping and murder of 6-year-old Etan Patz after he confessed to abducting the SoHo boy while he walked alone to a school bus stop in NYC.

Many of us aren’t unaware of the case of Etan Patz; in fact some of us weren’t even born yet. But Etan’s case became national news after he vanished on May 25, 1979, as he walked from his family’s SoHo apartment to his school bus stop just two blocks away.

Etan’s case struck a chord in the volatile climate of late ’70s/early ’80s New York City and launched a nationwide movement to put the pictures of missing kids on milk cartons. Etan was one of the first children featured on the side of a milk carton and May 25th has been named National Missing Children’s Day in his memory. 

Etan’s case spanned an entire generation, but for those of you who aren’t familiar with this sad tale, here is a quick timeline of events, people and places surrounding the case.
