Pop legend Madonna backed her off the wall remarks calling President Obama a “Black Muslim” during a concert performance earlier this week in Washington, DC.
On Monday, the “Material Girl” gave a profound speech laced with both a political endorsement and an erroneous statement about the POTUS.
“Now, it’s so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House … we have a black Muslim in the White House … it means there is hope in this country, and Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man.”
According to the 54-year-old pop star, she was deliberately being “ironic on stage.”
“I was being ironic on stage. Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim – though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?
The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don’t care what religion Obama is – nor should anyone else in America.”
Obama has faced a lot of racially charged criticism from opponents who called him an uncovered Muslim when, in actuality, he is Christian. Madonna’s right that the religious and ethnic make up of a president should not be a concern, but we’re not sure her comments were actually helpful.
