If we’re sure of anything, it’s that Solange Knowles is not your average superstar!

The unnaturally real and down-to-earth songwriter/singer isn’t scared to go where others will not – even Red Hook, the infamously dangerous neighborhood in Brooklyn.

Solange recently sat down with Vulture’s Jada Yuan, who followed the big-haired beauty around New York City as she discussed going completely indie, building her own album True from top to bottom, the perils of divorcing by the age of 21, and babysitting her niece Blue Ivy for her big sis Beyonce Knowles!

She told Juan:

“Blue comes over, I babysit. [Beyoncé] takes Julez sometimes for the weekend. [Blue] and Julez are going to grow up more like sister and brother than cousins.”

Solange goes onto explain that because she’s had a lot of experience with marriage and marital drama, she is able to be there for her sister now more than ever.

Though being a mom was kind of easy for her, Solange comments:

“Marriage is a whole ’nother ball game. [It’s a time] when you really, really need your sister. Every time there was drama and I was all the way in Idaho, it was nice to be able to call. Now it’s kind of a reversal, with her getting married and having a baby after me.”

As for going independent, Solo says that she never hesitated to give the middle finger to Interscope when they tried to block her creatively, while giving other artists like Lil’ Wayne the freedom she craved.

They came to the mutual decision that it was best to go their separate ways, and now Solange is celebrating True, a creation of her true self.

She explained:

“I made my entire record on my own from top to bottom. Everything from studio-equipment rentals to actually creating a studio. The entire album has been about me calling my friends, like, ‘Will you make a video with me?’ ‘Okay, cool. Let’s do it,’”

There’s something you just have to love about Solange. She is a hard worker, stays true to her art, and is not afraid to give it you straight – whether you’re Interscope or Donald Trumphimself.

Solo, we’re behind you 100 percent.
