Yoselyn Ortega, 50, said Lucia Krim, 6, fought back when she attacked her, and said Lucia’s brother Leo, 2, was sleeping when she began her frenzied assault in the bathroom of the family’s W. 75th St. apartment on Oct. 25.

As reported by the New York Daily News:

Ortega said she had money problems and that she had wanted to earn more, police sources said.

Cops charged Ortega Saturday with two counts of murder in the first and second degrees. She has been hospitalized since the slayings after apparently trying to kill herself by slicing her own neck as the children’s mother, Marina Krim, walked in on the crime scene.

Ortega, a native of the Dominican Republic and the mother of a 17-year-old son, Jesus, had worked for the Krims for two years, and relatives said the Krims treated her like family. She recently started seeing a psychologist, relatives told police.

It remains unclear when Ortega will be arraigned for the two murders.
