In a press conference on Wednesday, President Barack Obama announced that the task force on gun violence, headed by Vice President Joe Biden, will need to prepare concrete proposals on gun-control “no later than January.”

With the public pushing for stricter gun regulations in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings that killed 20 children and seven adults, the White House and Obama have responded by pledging to stand behind the assault weapons ban and to close the gun show loopholes.

The president chose Biden to lead the task force because of his experience in the Senate, including a major role in the 1994 crime bill that included an assault weapons ban that lapsed in 2004.

“There is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence.”

Obama said at the press conference. He added that just because he cannot prevent every act of violence, there were things that could be done to lessen it.

Obama referenced how clearance to own a gun should not be easier than mental health access.

“An unbalanced man should not be able to get a military-style assault weapon,” he said.

This declaration comes on the heels of Obama’s vow at a Newtown vigil on Sunday to stop event like these from happening:

“In the coming weeks, I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators, in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this, because what choice do we have? We can’t accept events like this as routine.”
