Indian engineering students have created an electrifying ‘anti-rape’ undergarment to protect women from unwarranted sexual aggressors.

Students Manisha, Rimpi and Neeladri from SRM University in Chennai, are taking this opportune moment, when rape coverage in the media is at an all time high, to show their support for women’s rights.

The underwear, called Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE), uses pressure sensors to detect unwanted force and is capable of inflicting 82 electric shocks to ward off potential attackers. A GPS is incorporated to send a text message to police and family to make sure they know the victim’s location in case they are unable to reach out themselves.

The device is still being tweaked with add-ons before hitting production, such as enabling wireless connection to smartphones.

When asked by The Times of India, Manisha explains their initial drive for the revolutionary invention:

“After stepping into the real, cruel world we realised that our smile could not last for long as the threat to our purity and integrity always lingered on. Since the law makers take ages to come up with just laws and even after that, women are unsafe. Hence, we have initiated the idea of self-defense which protects the women from domestic, social and workplace harassment.”

In a perfect world this device would be unnecessary, but until that time comes, we’re glad to welcome an addition to our pepper spray.

Hopefully the second generation SHE will come in bejeweled color options like Rihanna’s above!
