We told you about the Florida teen who was was arrested and charged over a same-sex relationship with an underage classmate.

Now, 18-year-old Kaitlyn Hunt is breaking her silence as news of her criminal charges and what she plans to do comes to light.

“I’m scared of losing the rest of my life, not being able to go to college, and be around kids, and my sisters, and my family,” Hunt told a group of reporters outside Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Fla., where authorities say the relationship started.

At one point, when asked about the ordeal she is going through, Hunt broke down and clung to her parents.

“I’m just scared and hoping for the best…,” she said.

Hunt is being charged with statutory rape after her 15-year-old girlfriends parents discovered their lesbian relationship and pressed charges.

The two girls had a consenting relationship, said Hunts mother, Kelly Hunt Smith. She told reporters that the two girls played on the same basketball team and shared the same friends. And Hunt’s father, has also publicly claimed that the girlfriend’s parents went to police because they blamed Kaitlyn for their child’s homosexuality.

“For someone who is an honor student, a cheerleader, played varsity basketball, [and has] never been in trouble – it just seems extremely inappropriate to push the felony charges,” Julia Graves, the family attorney, said in a news conference.

Today the lawyers for Hunt sent out a statement that their client “is choosing not to accept the current plea offer by the State of Florida.”

The plea deal would have allowed her to avoid registering as a sex offender if she had agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges of child abuse; Colton had recommended two years of house arrest followed by a year’s probation.

But refusing the plea means that the case will go to trial. If she’s convicted, there is a possibility she may have to register as a sex offender.

In the meantime, Hunt’s case is garnering national attention as a gay rights case. Her parents and many supporters believe she is being punished for her sexual orientation.

We’ll keep you updated on the latest.
