#LifeStyleHer’s Laurel DeWitt caught up with world-renowned artist Indie 184:

It’s no coincidence graffiti/visual artist Indie 184 derived her name from “Indiana Jones.” The Puerto Rican-born New York-native lives her life and expresses herself as fearlessly as the adventurous explorer.

She prides herself in finding the freedom to express her emotions in painting, utilizing her energy through the use of mixed media work including spray paint, acrylic, enamel, plaster, glitter, stencil and paper on canvas.

The result is a gritty yet pristine collection of pop-art infused urban masterpieces.

“For this piece, I started laying out the foundation, painting my graffiti, tags and layering paint. The image comes almost at the third phase. When I create a series of works I usually have a set soundtrack and listen to the same songs over and over again. Music pumps my energy in the studio. I looked at some vintage images and decided to use a more contemporary female icon. I love Rihanna’s energy and her pose in the photograph. ” – Indie

Indie has shown and curated numerous group and solo shows worldwide. In an industry resembling a graffiti tagged swimming pool dominated by men, Indie swims with ease — making a name for herself by launching her clothing line, “Kweens Destroy,” as well as producing artwork for MAC Cosmetics and the video game “Grand Theft Auto IV.”

When asked to give a tidbit of advice to aspiring artists, the mother of 3 responded without hesitation:

“Have no fear. Just make it happen. Have role models and female icons that you look up to. See what they did to be successful. Do it. Go for it. Don’t rest on your laurels.”
