Contenders: Barack Obama vs. House Republicans

Match:  President Barack Obama was able to avoid a government shutdown by striking a deal with with Speaker of the House John Boehner and House Republicans right before the deadline. President Obama said the shut down was avoided because “Americans of different beliefs came together.” An historic agreement reached late Friday night would cut about $38 billion in spending, Obama says some of the cuts will be painful but the White House protected its priority projects.

Numbers Game

Number: $50,000

Where: New Jersey

What: The NBA has fined the New Jersey Nets $50,000 because part-owner Jay-Z went into the Kentucky locker room after the Wildcats clinched a berth in the Final Four and took pictures with the players.

League spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the fine Friday before the Nets played the New York Knicks at the Prudential Center.

Where: Alphen aan den Rijn

What Happened: At least six people have been shot dead in a shopping centre in Alphen aan den Rijn by a gunman who sprayed passersby with an automatic weapon. The shooting happened at the busy Ridderhof centre just after midday. According to media reports, the man ran shooting throught the shopping centre and then shot himself in the head using a different gun.

Better Than Fiction

Character: Kunio Shiga

Plot Line: Stranded alone inside his unheated farmhouse is 75-year-old Kunio Shiga. After the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, Shiga cannot walk very far and doesn’t know what happened to his wife. His neighbors have all left because the area is 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant – just within the zone where authorities have told everyone to get out because of concerns about leaking radiation.

No rescuer ever came for him.

Hero Of The Day

Who: Diane Latiker

What: With the continuing gang violence in a Chicago South Side neighborhood, a grandmother has stepped up and created an open door policy. Roseland resident Diane Latiker, 54, started a nonprofit community with 10 kids in her living room in 2003. The program, Kids Off The Block, has grown to become a successful mentoring site and haven for Chicago’s youth, serving 300 kids last year, take a look.
