EXCERPT 10: Love Your Work

As much as I cherish yoga and meditation, outside of spending time with my daughters, nothing makes me happier, or feel as free, as sitting down at my desk each morning and becoming completely engaged in a piece of work. To take on a problem and become so focused on it and connected to it that it feels like time is standing still.

(A common misconception is that “times flies” when you’re working your hardest. That when you’re really plugged in, you’ll look up at the clock and you’re shift will be over before you even know it. The truth is, however, when you’re completely focused on a moment at work, time moves slowly. And that’s how you’ll want it to be. When you’re totally tuned in, you won’t even be thinking about when your shift is going to end.)

For some, heading to work is akin to heading to jail—they feel like they have to “serve” their time on the job. They’re trying to escape their work rather than embrace it. I’m so thankful every day that I sit down behind my desk, I’m excited to be there.
