What would you do if a federal court ordered your mom to pay $1.5 million for downloading 24 songs illegally? Well, Minnesota mom, Jammie Thomas-Rasset found herself in this exact predicament. The Recording Industry Association of America has reportedly found that Thomas-Rasset has actually shared 1,700 songs, but is only suing over 24. This case is sure to put a little fear in everyone’s hearts because countless people are guilty of illegally downloading and sharing music via the internet.

The mom has vehemently denied ever using Kazaa—the file sharing site, saying: ‘It’s not a fair law. In my eyes, it’s legalized extortion.’ She also went on to list the concerns any mother would have in a case such as this, “Any amount that I pay to them is money that I could use to feed my children. Any amount that I pay to them is money I could use to clothe my kids, and pay my mortgage so my kids have a place to sleep.”

It seems the recording industry is bent on making an example out of Jammie Thomas-Rasset. Let’s hope they come to a reasonable understanding.
