Asiana Airlines Flight 214 was said to be below target speed for proper descent and when crew members discovered this, they tried to abort the landing – but it was too late.

The target landing speed for such a plane as the Boeing 777 is 137 knots (158 mph). However, the aircraft’s speed before landing was “significantly” lower than that, declared National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman during a press briefing on Sunday.

“We’re not talking about a few knots here or there, we’re talking about a significant amount of speed below 137 knots,” Hersman said.

She also stated that because of such a major incident, an investigation is now taking place to review the crew members’ performance, as well as to make sure that there were no equipment malfunctions.

The Boeing 777 Asiana Airlines flight crashed in San Francisco International Airport and of the 307 passengers that were on board, two people were killed and many more were injured.
