The mother of Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis is finally speaking out after her son shot and killed 12 people in D.C. on Monday morning.

Cathleen Alexis apologized for her son’s actions, telling CNN that she’s glad he’s in a place where he can no longer do harm to anyone.

“I don’t know why he did what he did, and I’ll never be able to ask him why,” Cathleen Alexis said in a statement recorded by CNN.

“I’m so, so very sorry this has happened. My heart is broken,” she said.

Investigators are still trying to find what Alexis’ motive may have been. They have collected his computer and other possessions from the hotel where he spent his last days and are gaining an understanding of who he was from friends, coworkers and family.

Just yesterday, Alexis’ stepfather came forth to tell authorities that his stepson was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, brought on by the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

But as of yet, authorities have not pinned down a specific motive.
