A couple of weeks before Drake released his Nothing Was the Same album, the rapper leaked “Wu-Tang Forever.” And while it’s a critically acclaimed song, there were a percentage of hip-hop heads who weren’t feeling the track because, well, it didn’t sound like a Wu-Tang record.

Most notably, Inspectah Deck went on a Twitter rant about the song, saying it didn’t honor Wu-Tang at all.

You know who didn’t have a problem with the record? The RZA. Drake needed his permission to get the “It’s Yourz” sample on the record, and he gave it to him.

The Wu-Tang leader revealed this detail in an interview he gave to Rolling Stone.

When asked how he felt about the Drake record, the RZA said:

“I appreciate it. He sent me the song because they couldn’t clear the sample. So I did it myself, personally, for free. Free of charge. Because to me, that’s what we meant when we said Wu-Tang is forever. We didn’t think we were going to live forever. We meant that the energy of what we do would spread on in culture, generation by generation. And by Drake absorbing it and having that influence in his life and having it be a part of him, it proves what I’m saying. And I’m really proud that he chose that rap.”

RZA isn’t the only Wu Tang member to cosign the song. Raekwon and U-God also showed love to the record.

So take that, take that, Inspectah Deck.
