In the wake of a number of high-profile rape cases that have caused widespread protests across India, a top police official made a rape remark that suggests he supports rape culture – outraging women across the country.

Speaking at a conference about illegal sports betting and the need to legalize gambling, Central Bureau of Investigation chief Ranjit Sinha said this:

“If you cannot enforce the ban on betting, it is like saying, ‘If you can’t prevent rape, you enjoy it.'”

Sinha was trying to make a point that if the state could not stop gambling, it could at least make some money by legalizing it.

Which, obviously, isn’t a good analogy at all. But on Wednesday, Sinha claimed that his comments were taken out of context and apologized to those he hurt.

It’s not enough. Angry activists are still calling for his resignation.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat said Sinha’s comments were offensive to women everywhere.

“It is sickening that a man who is in charge of several rape investigations should use such an analogy,” Karat told reporters. “He should be prosecuted for degrading and insulting women.”

Well said.
