There’s nothing like the smell of a brand new handbag. But for anyone who spent a pretty penny to purchase an Hermès purse in the past year, that smell might be more like one of marijuana.

Page Six reports that customers are complaining that their Birkin bags, which retail for at least $20,000, have a skunky scent, especially when being exposed to the sun and heat.

One customer commented on PurseBlog, saying:

‘“After riding in the car with her for about 30 minutes, I smelled what I thought was a dead skunk. Another 30 minutes later I could still smell the dead skunk, and I thought it was odd, but never imagined it could be my bag. I keep (it) in an armoire . . . When I opened the cabinet door this morning, the smell hit me, and I immediately knew it was the bag.”’

The luxury label says that this is a worldwide issue because of a batch of “badly tanned” leather from an Hermès supplier, and that affected bags, including other iconic designs like the Kelly and Elan clutch, have to be sent back to Paris to be rebuilt.

This gives whole new meaning to the term “high fashion.”
