Texas Republican Michael Burgess is pro-life. No surprise there.
But his reason for banning abortions will definitely make you go “hmmm?”
As the House of Representatives prepares to consider huge legislative restrictions on women’s reproductive rights, Burgess offered this little gem to argue that abortions should be banned:
Fetuses can masturbate. So don’t abort them.
On Monday evening, Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX), an Ob/Gyn by trade, told his colleagues to, “Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful. They stroke their face. If they’re a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to believe that they could feel pain?”
Ummmmm. No. No, I don’t think that’s what they are doing.
The bill uses the argument that a fetus can feel pain after 20 weeks (which has been scientifically disputed) as the basis for effectively banning all abortions after that time.
Not sure if they will be successful, but I can tell you this little argument won’t work.
