In the words of Marvin Gaye, “Ain’t no mountain high enough, Ain’t no valley low enough, Ain’t no river wide enough” can definitely explain the devastation of Manshiyat Naser, aka “Garbage City.”

Garbage City is a slum settlement at the base of Mokattam Hill in Cairo, Egypt. 13,000 tons of garbage is thrown away in the region every day.

The city’s economy revolves around the collection and recycling of the city’s garbage. The locals in Garbage City are said to make a good living by recycling the huge amounts of rubbish.

This community often has no running water, sewage, or electricity. Mountains of waste are stacked up around walls of an apartment block in Cairo’s Garbage City.

The Citarum River in Indonesia has turned into a huge waste dump. Because of industrialization in the ‘80s; more than 500 factories line the banks of the 200-mile river, causing leaking chemical waste into the water.

Rivers in Manila are apparently so dense with litter that small animals are regularly seen running up and down in search of food. The resultant odor is said to be unbearable.
