In an exclusive interview with 50, GlobalGrind chit-chatted with the platinum selling rapper to talk album sales and the music industry in general.
When we mentioned Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV almost selling a million albums in the first week, 50 let us know immediately that he wasn’t buying the numbers.
“To be honest with you, the Lil Wayne sales are a little suspect to me. Because it was trending 600,000 pieces that week. And they didn’t do a million copies, it was like 900,000.”
In regards to Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, which sold a million copies in the first week back in 2008, 50 gives Lil Wayne his props: “Tha Carter III was definitely hot. He did that.”
50 Cent goes on to say:
“Tha Carter III commanded that energy, but the last one that just came out, those numbers are funny.”
50 is usually a very fair critic and gives credit when credit is due, but is he being too critical of Lil Wayne?
This isn’t the first time 50 has been critical of Weezy. After MTV made Lil Wayne the number one rapper a few years back, 50 said:
“You got other artists that are there that haven’t even made their own records…the number one artist, tell me his first single off his last album.”
Once the MTV reporter was unable to name Lil Wayne’s first single, 50 took that as a point proven.
Lil Wayne didn’t take offense to the 50 rant, but instead he said:
“I respect him. I just took it as a compliment. I’d never go back at 50, that n*gga’s a trillionaire [laughs]. I’m tryin to get there homie. I’m smart, I ain’t dumb.”
Sounds like there’s definitely some rivalry between 50 and Wayne!
Does 50 Cent have a point about Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV album sales?
