“Pretty Little Liars” Fashion (PHOTOS)
The plot of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars may seem a little unrealistic. Four very fashionable friends band together against an anonymous text happy enemy who is keeping the girls – and their lies – on edge, while unraveling the mystery of the murder of their best friend, Alison. But the only thing less realistic than the plot is the amazingly developed fashion sense these high school students from a small town outside of Philadelphia possess. But television is all about the fantasy, isn’t it?
Shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl were famed for their ability to bring fashion to the networks, but with both of those shows out of the running and in syndication purgatory, where fashion doesn’t age well, Pretty Little Liars has the prime opportunity to step up to the plate.
With Tumblrs dedicated to the cast’s fashion, it’s obvious that the characters are becoming style mavens, but in real life, the show’s actresses are also being embraced by the fashion world. Shay Mitchell, who plays the sporty lesbian Emily, has graced Complex Magazine, best dressed Lucy Hale, who plays rocker chic Aria, has enjoyed both a Cosmo and Nylon cover, and Hannah, also known as Ashley Benson, is the concrete catwalk starlet when it comes to street style.
Apparently, attaching designer names to the show also proves a spike in sales. During the show’s second season, Rebecca Minkoff said one of the characters referenced her red minibag by name and “from there we noticed a definite uptick in sales.”
Now that is fashion power.
Pretty Little Liars costume stylist Mandi Line described the show’s aesthetic best when, in an interview with CNN last September, she said: “Why be conservative about hemlines and heel heights on a show where a teacher is dating a student and a drunk girl can’t remember if she dug up her friend’s dead body?”
Seriously, what is a little scandal without some high fashion to match?
Check out some of our favorite fashion looks from the cast in the gallery above, and don’t be afraid to show the little liars some love. Even though they are in high school, we could all learn a thing or two about being fashionable – no matter the occasion.
