Dear Quvenzhané Wallis,

You’re not going to win the Oscar.

In fact, the Huffington Post is giving you a 0.1 percent chance of taking home the trophy. Your movie, Beast of A Southern Wild has a 0.0 percent chance of winning the Oscar. So don’t expect to win gold there either. You’re not going to win any hardware on Sunday.

With that said, I want you to know that is a good thing. You don’t need their recognition, because you’ve already won in our book. You’ve made history being the youngest actress ever to be nominated for an Oscar. We’re proud of you. Since you’re wise beyond your years, I feel no need to sugar coat things.

You’ll never win an Oscar unless you play a slave, a maid or black trash. You see, the Oscars don’t reward blacks too often. If I’m lying, I’m flying. In the 83 years of the Academy Awards, only 28 blacks have won awards. Quvenzhane, you’re only the 10th black lady to ever get recognized as one of the best actresses, so for that, you’ve already won.

But I beg you, do not stop now. You have to keep doing great work. You have to take on roles as complicated as Hush Puppy. When you walk on that red carpet, we want you to know we got your back.

Because you now have the same baton that the great Dorothy Dandridge carried when she broke down the door to be the first black actress nominated for an Oscar in Carmen Jones.

The same baton that Diana Ross held when she became the first black actress to get nominated for her debut role, like yourself. Quvenzhane, the baton in your hand was held by Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carroll, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis and others and in their eyes, you’re already a winner.

You’re different from all of those amazing and super talented women. Because you have a future far brighter than any of those other ladies. I know in my bones that one day you will follow in the footsteps of Halle Berry and actually win the award.

So when your category comes up and your name is or is not called; smile. Hold you head up high and know that you’re already a winner to us. If for some reason you do feel down, just remember:

You is smart. You is kind. And you is important. You did your thing, Hush Puppy.
