It was almost summer break, and 13-year-old Brooklynn Mohler and a friend were looking forward to the last day of seventh grade.

But the mood suddenly changed just minutes after school let out, when a gun her friend was holding accidently discharged, shooting her down.

Brooklynn was rushed to the University Medical Center in critical condition, but doctors were unable to save her.

No adults were at the Las Vegas home where the shooting took place. The 13-year-old who was holding the firearm will not be charged, a spokesman from the Las Vegas police department said.

“The shooting was the result of an unintentional discharge and was purely a tragic accident.”

He also added that the weapon was stored responsibly by the owner, and wasn’t left out carelessly. No charges are expected to be filed against the parents.

Friends and classmates at her middle school are shocked and saddened by her tragic death.

“She was really outgoing and bright. She was friends with everyone. She was loud and funny,” one of her classmates said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Brooklynn’s family and friends at this time. May she rest in peace.
