Miley Cyrus  as we know her now — probably started in August of 2012, when she showed up with a new cut. (Some would say the dick cake in January of 2012 started shit, but we digress).

We didn’t realize it yet.

In fact, we realized Miley was a changed person when it was too late, in the springtime when she released that crazy twerk video.

We know now, though. Miley was the most relevant pop star of 2013, and it wasn’t even close.

Scroll down to see how her year unfolded.

Miley & Liam

The first quarter of the year was dominated by news of Miley’s relationship with heartthrob Liam Hemsworth. They must have broken up and gotten back together at least a 100 times. The two finally really called it quits in September.  (If you wanna know a full timeline of their on-again, off-again thang, this guide will do you justice).

Miley gets new friends

At the end of 2012, no one thought that they were going to get a twerkin’, hip-hop-loving Miley. But we should have seen it coming. On Twitter, Miley would randomly hit up hip-hop stars like Mack Maine and Tyler, the Creator.

Early on in the year, news came out that Miley was working on a new album, and she was hitting the studio with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Tyler, Juicy J and Mike WiLL Made-It. Then pictures of the singer kicking it with hip-hop royalty started popping up. Miley was seen partying with everyone from Teyana Taylor to Lil Kim and Wiz Khalifa.

Mike & Miley…or Miley & Mike

The biggest co-sign was her association with hit producer Mike WiLL Made-It. The two became inseparable, so much so, that there were rumors that the two were dating (even while Miley was still trying to work things out with Liam).

Miley the twerk queen

The breakout moment for Miley came when she randomly dropped her infamous twerkin’ video. Over the somewhat obscure party anthem “WOP,” performed by J Dash, Miley twerked her little heart out, wearing a unicorn outfit, for some reason.

Miley drops the “We Can’t Stop” video

When Miley dropped her new single “We Can’t Stop” back in June, most agreed that it was a good song. But it didn’t turn into an iconic song until Miley released the video a couple of weeks of later. The visuals for the track are probably some of the most memorable of the year, featuring everything from giant bears to stuffed dead animals. The video is incredibly random…and so Miley.

Ooohhh, grill ’em

Grills are so hip-hop. Miley is made the transition into hip-hop this year, so it’s only right that the girl get herself one too.

The Jay Z co-sign!

We’re not sure if Jay Z’s “Miley Cyrus” line on “Somewhereinamerica” was a shout out or diss. What we do know is that Miley loved it.

The VMAs

Twerk is now officially a word. Miley Cyrus and her performance at the 2013 VMAs is the reason why. Miley gave one of the most memorable performances of all time, performing her hit “We Can’t Stop” and helping Robin Thicke perform “Blurred Lines.” Despite all the jokes, and there were a lot, Miley won because of her epic VMAs showing.

Bury da beef, Miley

After her VMAs performance, there were many critics. And Miley wasn’t scared to strike back at all of them. After Skylar Grey threw some shade, Miley sent the slick tweet you see above.  Miley also struck back at Sinead O’Connor after the singer said she was being prostituted.

Wrecking Ball

Advice for pop stars trying to come up: make bomb ass music videos. Miley Cyrus basically owned the Internet when she released her very naked “Wrecking Ball” video in September.

Terry’s muse

In 2013, famed photographer Terry Richardson released two sets of Miley Cyrus pictures. It was the second set that really shocked the world, though. It featured the singer basically showing off all of her body that we hadn’t seen before.

Bangerz slayz

What can you say: she gets results. Not only was her Bangerz album — the first Miley project to feature this new hip-hop sound of hers — critically acclaimed, but it was a smash commercially, debuting number one on Soundscan.

Miley as Kim

Miley definitely had the celebrity costume of the year this Halloween: the singer dressed up as Lil Kim, wearing the same dress the rapper wore at the 1999 VMAs.

Miley turned 21!

People give Miley a lot of shit, but you gotta remember, the singer JUST TURNED 21. Basically, she’s a senior in college. She’s going to act wild, and she’s going to do things that might seem confusing to some.

We’ll just ask you this: what did you in the year you turned 21? Whatever it was, it doesn’t match up to what Ms. Cyrus did.
